Both protein and carbohydrates are an essential part of your diet. You want to be sure you are taking in the proper amount of each, and not going overboard or depriving yourself of these food groups. To do this you need to know how much of each of these you need. The average adult needs between 60 and 80 grams of protein a day. To put this in perspective, a three-ounce serving of meat has about 21 grams of protein. If you want to figure out how many carbs you need a day you need to figure out how many you burn, as they are your body’s main energy source.
A serving size of meat is three-ounces, which will provide you with about one third to one fourth of your daily grams of protein as mentioned above. Beyond meats such as beef or pork, fish, poultry, and eggs are also rich in protein. A serving size of eggs is two eggs, or four egg whites, or half a cup of egg substitute. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt, or cheese are good sources as well, but those that are full fat should only be consumed sometimes. While protein is a crucial part of one’s diet, not all meats should be consumed liberally. High-fat meats such as chicken wings, hot dogs, ribs, bacon, and sausage should be infrequently eaten in small portions.
For an alternative to meat try a bean burger or a veggie burger. Soymilk and tofu have protein as well. Other non-meat foods that have protein are beans and peas, with a serving size of ¾ cup. Two tablespoons of nuts or seeds, such as almonds, pumpkin seeds, or pecans, are a good source of protein as well.
